Meet the foundation

FMB stands as a distinguished non-governmental, non-profit organization, officially recognized as a public-interest entity. We operate as an environmental conservation NGO since 2010, unwavering in our commitment to sustainable development and in fostering strong partnerships with local authorities and the Maio community.

Our initiatives are made possible by the invaluable technical and financial support provided by numerous national and international partners, contributing to both our core expenses and our four distinct programs: i) Protected Areas, ii) Marine and Sustainable Fisheries, iii) Education and Sustainable Development and iv) Sea Turtle Protection. They encompass a wide array of projects promoting the protection of biodiversity and landscapes, socio-ecological monitoring, education and awareness, and sustainable development initiatives.

These efforts are all geared toward safeguarding the island from the imminent threat posed by unsustainable development tourism projects. Besides the public administration, FMB is currently the largest employer on the island, contributing to alleviating poverty and addressing the pressing challenges of high unemployment rates among both youth and women. Our thirteen years of community-based conservation efforts have earned us a Medal of Honour from the President of the Republic of Cabo Verde.
